British Islands and Mediterranean Region

British Islands and Mediterranean Region

CPA branches are divided into regions. CPA UK is part of the British Islands and Mediterranean Region (BIMR) and also serves as its Secretariat.

What is CPA BIMR?

CPA Branches are divided into five geographic regions, and each region engages in its own programme of activities to strengthen regional ties.

Along with CPA UK, the other branches that make up CPA BIMR are:

BIMR governance

The BIMR strategy provides a framework within which objectives and associated activities are conducted to achieve the mission, “to work for the advancement of parliamentary democracy throughout the Commonwealth”. In order to implement its strategy the BIMR pursues three objectives which provide the basis for the Region’s annual programme. The objectives reflect current and future challenges facing the advancement of parliamentary democracy, good governance and human rights in the Commonwealth.

BIMR activities

There are two major BIMR activities. The first is the Annual General Meeting (AGM), which is the authority for all Regional activities and is chaired by the longest serving of the three rotating Regional Representatives.

The second is the BIMR Regional Conference, which reflects the priorities of good governance and parliamentary democracy by addressing issues such as:

  • ICT techonology
  • Children’s rights
  • Corruption
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Poverty reduction
  • Sustainable development
  • Trade and investment

The most recent AGM and Regional Conference took place in St Helier, Jersey in May 2016. Read more here and download the minutes of the AGM here.

BIMR representatives

Three Regional Representatives from each CPA Region sit on the overall CPA Executive Committee.

The current BIMR representatives are:

Rt Hon. Sir Alan Haselhurst MP (UK)
Hon. Carmelo Abela MP (Malta)
Councillor Derek Thomas (St Helena)
