I did, and halfway through my work experience application, I closed the tab. But the inclusive age limit of 18-25 at CPA UK made me reconsider. As the G20 summit in India had taken place the weekend just before my visit, I was intrigued to learn that while there might not be a direct link, the conversations and projects at CPA UK can have far-reaching implications across international policy circles, illustrating the organisation's wide scope.
Next, I delved into the world of the Multilateral Projects Team, which provided an invaluable extension to my knowledge of multilateralism acquired during my time at the UN and in university lectures on international relations. Witnessing theories from studies put into practice in real-life scenarios illuminated the true benefits of this work experience.
A pivotal moment for me was entering the chambers to witness the Secretary of Defence addressing concerns from MPs and their constituents, all in a single day. Needless to say, the next two weeks flew by as I encountered passionate individuals and impactful projects. I had the honour of seeing CPA welcome a delegation from Tobago and observing their discussions. Moreover, I engaged in meaningful conversations about my future aspirations with Rt Hon. Lord Foulkes of Cumnock and The Rt Hon. Baroness D'Souza, who shared valuable guidance and wisdom from their extensive experience.
What I've Learned: A Wealth of Experience in Two Weeks
In just two weeks, I absorbed the practical intricacies of interparliamentary relations, collaborated with inspiring individuals, and contributed to various projects:
- AI and Emerging Innovations: I developed and presented a project of my choice. Utilising my previous expertise, I explored the implications of AI and emerging innovations on democracy and women in parliament, complete with educational recommendations for parliamentarians and a forward-looking action plan.
- Research Paper on Sri Lanka-UK Relations: I crafted a research paper outlining the intricate relationship between Sri Lanka and the UK for the Asia-Pacific Manager.
- Communication Plan: I honed my communication skills by crafting a comprehensive communication strategy to increase engagement in programmes from MPs and Lords.
I’ve also had the opportunity to put together other smaller projects. The experience is really what you make of it.
