AI in Security Workshop
28 January 2025 - 30 January 2025
Venue: UK Parliament
CPA UK is excited to have hosted the AI in Security Workshop last week, in partnership with international think tank Chatham House.
From Tuesday 28th January to Thursday 30th January, this three-day workshop held at the UK Parliament, was a chance for Commonwealth delegates to come together and share valuable insights and collaborate on innovative solutions.
Thirty parliamentarians from 15 Commonwealth legislatures gathered at Westminster to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence on security and democracy worldwide. There was representation from Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
The workshop addressed critical issues facing the world today such as AI-enabled disinformation, cybersecurity, defence, and international frameworks for responsible AI. Exchanging experiences and sharing ideas, delegates explored strategies to counter emerging threats as well as strengthen democratic resilience in the face of rapidly evolving technologies.
Speakers included Lord Kamall from the House of Lords and Chi Onwurah MP, Chair of the Science Innovation and Technology Committee, both representing the UK Parliament. Meanwhile, organisations which took part included Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and The Alan Turing Institute.
Before the event Sarah Dickson, Chief Executive of CPA UK, said:
"This timely event brings together parliamentarians, policymakers, and experts to examine AI’s vast opportunities and challenges through a global security lens. We are proud to collaborate with Chatham House, a respected and leading think tank, to facilitate discussions on critical topics such as disinformation, digital colonialism, and the implications of AI for international law.
This workshop offers a unique space for dialogue and collaboration, helping us better understand AI’s profound impact on governance and security worldwide and promote actionable solutions on a global scale.”
